This morning I was delighted to do a new (to me!) Land Blessing Ceremony in my garden - and the hedge sparrows greeted me with this little egg, with the Moon up (you'll have to peer as the sky is bright!) too.
Here's a post about it. Maybe you'll enjoy reading it as a pause in your day's busyness. Take a moment to feel into the words, perhaps. To see what inspires you about the land you live on...
When we bought this house, 8 years ago, I did a shamanic journey to meet the spirit of the house and the garden. I asked if there was anything it needed.
When we move I'll be doing a releasing ceremony too.
(If you'd like to hear about this, please let me know in the comments and I'll see what I can do!)
But today's land ceremony was different. Giving gratitude to the land - no shamanic journey - is something ANYONE can do.
As I did it, I noticed...
I'm grateful to all the people who lived on this land before me. The earth for providing this part of her for us to live on for generations. To this land for being fields before the 1960s, imagining no road, no cars even before that.
Then I found myself thinking of the 19th Century and then way, way, waaaaay back. Thinking of the low growing plants, the trees, the insects, birds, hedgehogs, foxes, deer. Thinking of the ancestors who may have hunted here. I hold them all in gratitude.
Then I think of those who are to come. My children growing up here over the last 8 years. Our 2 year old cocker spaniel, Cora. Those who will move in (soon I hope!) after us and the generations to come. Those coming soon. Those centuries in the future. How the land might change over that time. And that we might all tend and steward this land. Appreciate it, as best we can.
Yes, we've lost the wilderness. But we are still able to hold the land sacred. We are still able to create ways for the insects, birds and wildlife to be here with flowers, seed, hedgehog tunnels, and doing all we can to support natural and sustainable farming practices in the land that grows our food.
We can bring our hearts to our back yard gardens. To the land under our apartments and flats. To the land, the earth, that supports us every day of our life. And to the land from whence we came (we are literally made up of all the minerals and water that comes from the earth) and to where we return.
And maybe we can connect to Gaia as a living, breathing entity. Not just a 'resource', but a being with a full system just like our body's have. With feedback loops and homeostasis, with balance and equilibrium and raging fevers to bring things back into balance.
Noticing the sun in the sky above the land, and it's apparent journey through our daily skies. Noticing the Moon here, waxing this morning, up at the same time as the sun. Feeling joy at seeing the two together.
And, as an animist, or as a child of God (whatever 'God'/Universe means to you), I feel the spirit that flows through all things is here. And the earth has its own spirit, its own soul. However you see or feel or sense it, that is where deep belonging and connection lie.
By taking the time to connect to the land me and my family rest upon, to share gratitude and time, and to offer a sacrifice (no slaying I promise! Just giving up something as a sign of appreciation) I feel more deeply connected.
As Lynn Trotta wisely said to me - by connecting with the land closest to us we become friends. Frequent friends. Good friends. And eventually family.
The closest land to you might not be the wildest, the most able to lift you into spontaneous reverie . But it is the land that is your family in this way. And the land you are in every day. By nurturing this connection we nurture ourselves.
I feel so much more connected as a result of today's ceremony. I commend it to you. Wholeheartedly.
I look forward to being able to share it in the future, once I am more familiar and more experienced and more practised in this particular form (Let me know if you'd like to know in the comments below!)
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
